Taking Time to Practice Gratitude: My (Sometimes Wobbly) Journey to Staying Thankful

You know that feeling when you’re stuck in traffic, the baby just dropped their pacifier for the millionth time, and your coffee’s gone from hot to lukewarm? Yeah, that’s about the time the concept of “practicing gratitude” feels like a cosmic joke. But bear with me because I promise there’s more to it than just pretending everything is rainbows and butterflies.

Let me be real for a sec: practicing gratitude isn’t always easy. Some days, finding something to be grateful for feels like looking for Wi-Fi in the middle of nowhere. But what I’ve learned over time—through all the good days, chaotic days, and everything in between—is that taking a little time to reflect on what’s going right can make the not-so-fun moments feel a little lighter.

🤪Why Gratitude Matters (Even When Life’s a Mess)😜

If you’re anything like me, your to-do list is probably longer than a CVS receipt, and finding time to be “grateful” doesn’t feel like it’s at the top of that list. But here’s the thing: gratitude has a way of shifting your mindset, even on the messiest days. I’m not saying it’ll magically fix everything (it’s not like my laundry piles are suddenly folding themselves because I said “thank you” to the universe), but it helps.

Gratitude gives you perspective. When I take a moment to acknowledge the good stuff—like a peaceful morning with my coffee or my baby’s giggle—it helps balance out the craziness of everyday life. It’s not about ignoring the hard stuff, but about finding those little pockets of joy in between.

🌻How I (Actually) Practice Gratitude🌻

Okay, so we’ve established that gratitude is good for us. But how do you actually make time for it when life feels like a constant whirlwind? For me, it’s about being intentional but also realistic. Here are a few ways I’ve worked gratitude into my daily routine (in ways that don’t feel overwhelming):

Morning Gratitude Check-In

Before I even get out of bed, I try to think of one thing I’m thankful for. It doesn’t have to be deep—sometimes it’s just, “I’m grateful I didn’t wake up to a diaper explosion.” Other times, it’s a little more profound, like feeling grateful for the health of my family. Starting the day with a little positivity sets the tone for everything else.

The 3 Things List

At the end of each day, I jot down three things that went well. They don’t have to be life-changing. One day, my list was: 1) Didn’t burn dinner. 2) Finished work before 9 PM. 3) Got baby to nap for more than 20 minutes. It’s the small victories, right? It’s not about being perfect; it’s about recognizing that there’s always something to be thankful for, even if it’s tiny.

Gratitude Walks

This one is great for multitasking. If I’m out walking with the baby or just taking a quick stroll to clear my head, I’ll mentally run through things I’m grateful for. It’s like a little walking meditation. Plus, fresh air and gratitude go together like peanut butter and jelly.

🙏When Gratitude Feels Hard🙏

Let’s be honest: some days, practicing gratitude feels impossible. On those days when everything seems to go wrong and you just want to crawl under the covers, finding something to be thankful for can feel like a tall order. And that’s okay.

Here’s the trick I’ve learned: on the hard days, gratitude doesn’t have to be some grand realization. It can be as simple as, “I’m thankful I made it through the day” or “I’m grateful for this cozy blanket.” The point is to acknowledge something, even if it’s small. Over time, those little moments of gratitude start to add up and help shift your mindset.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Gratitude as a Community Builder🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

Gratitude isn’t just a solo act. When you start sharing the things you’re thankful for with others, it can create this awesome ripple effect. Whether it’s texting a friend to say you’re thankful for their support or posting a gratitude list on social media, it helps build connection. We all have rough days, and sometimes hearing someone else’s gratitude moment reminds you to take a breath and reflect on your own.

So, here’s my challenge for you (and me!): take a moment today to acknowledge something you’re grateful for. Maybe it’s a cozy fall breeze, a supportive friend, or the fact that you’ve managed to keep a plant alive for more than a week. Whatever it is, take a second to appreciate it. And then, share it. Because gratitude isn’t just about us—it’s about the community we build when we share our joy with others.

⚖️ In the End, It’s About Balance ⚖️

Gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring the tough stuff or pretending everything’s perfect. It’s about finding those small moments of light, even on the darkest days. It’s about showing yourself a little grace when life gets crazy and remembering that there’s always something to be thankful for—even if it’s just making it to bedtime without losing your mind.

So, let’s practice this gratitude thing together. I’ll start: I’m grateful for this space, this community, and the chance to share a little piece of my journey with you. Now, your turn—what are you grateful for today?

Let’s keep this gratitude train rolling, one small thank-you at a time.

‼️TL;DR: Gratitude isn’t about being endlessly positive or pretending life is perfect. It’s about finding small moments of joy and acknowledging them—especially when things get tough. Whether it’s a cozy blanket or a 5-minute break, there’s always something to be grateful for. Let’s share those moments and build community together!
